Diana Krall has sold more than 15 million albums worldwide, including over six million in the US. On December 11, 2009, Billboard magazine named her the second greatest jazz artist of the decade (2000–2009), establishing her as one of the best-selling artists of her time. Diana is the only jazz singer to have had eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, she has won two Grammy Awards and eight Juno Awards. She has also earned nine gold, three platinum, and seven multi-platinum albums.
At the outset of her career in the 1990s, Diana Krall appeared to be a throwback to a different, classier era -- specifically, the mid-20th century, when the Great American Songbook experienced a revival in the hands of singers such as Nat King Cole. Krall's 1996 breakthrough, All for You: A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio, deliberately paid tribute to this period, but Krall didn't focus merely on singing the song in an old-fashioned way: as the subtitle of All for You suggested, Krall placed equal emphasis on the piano playing. It was a conscious decision that gave her music an elegance and elasticity that has served her well. Although she often returned to the classic songs written in the first half of the 20th century, Krall expanded the definition of the American Songbook to encompass bossa nova and pop/rock singer/songwriters, occasionally exploring forgotten sectors of 20th-century pop and jazz. Throughout her career, Krall has managed to balance traditionalism with a sense of stylish adventure, which has helped her retain both a jazz and crossover audience.
Born and raised in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up in a musical household. Her father was an amateur piano player and her mother was part of a choir. Krall started playing piano when she was four, and she quickly excelled. In high school, she specialized in jazz, playing it at school and at low-key local gigs. Her prowess earned her a scholarship to Boston's Berklee College of Music, which she attended between 1981 and 1983, leaving the school so she could head to Los Angeles to pursue a career in jazz.
TRISH EVANS is the Fox Big Band’s pianist. This is her singing debut with the band. Trish is a long-time resident of Calgary and teaches music at the Trish Evans Academy of Music. Trish can be heard all around Calgary in many venues, including Alvin’s Jazz Club and on the Heritage Park summer music cruises on the SS Moyie.
FOX BIG BAND enjoys a growing audience in Calgary, performing at the Ironwood Stage and Grill and other venues. The Band’s repertoire explores a variety of different musical styles in blues, Latin jazz, rock, funk, bebop, fusion and contemporary music, all arranged in modern big band orchestration. With 13 horns, a full rhythm section and the occasional vocalist and guest artist, the band impresses with the dynamic power of a big band—it can roar like the big band it is - or can quietly purr on a gentle ballad as well.
The band’s musicians include some of Calgary’s finest jazz musicians, featuring a lot of jazz solo work, along with some nifty ensemble playing. The band’s music ranges through well-known artists such as Pat Metheny, and Phil Collins, contemporary big bands such as Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, and great classic big bands such as Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Duke Ellington and countless others. Some recent performances have featured the music of Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, pat Metheny, Count Basie, Buddy Rich and Mies Davis.
FOX BIG BAND, now under the direction of Brandon Oberhamer, was formed in the 1980s by Doug Fox, a Calgary trumpeter and bass player and jazz arranger. Doug always enjoyed playing the music of the classic swing big bands but was also interested in composing and arranging contemporary big band music that crossed into other genres of music in blues, Latin jazz, funk, rock and other contemporary styles.
